Social Security Administration

  • SSA DEFINITION OF DISABLED  

    • Disabled Adult 

      • An individual who is unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of medically determinable physical or mental impairment that:  

        • Can be expected to result in death, or 

        • Has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months  

    • Disabled Child  

      • An individual under the age of 18 that has a medically determinable physical or mental impairment which results in marked and severe functional limitations and which:  

        • Is expected to result in death, or  

        • Can be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months y 

 

  • SUPPLEMENTAL SECURITY INCOME (SSI)  

    • Provides minimum basic financial assistance to individuals with disabilities with limited income and resources

Transportation Resources

  • TUSCALOOSA TRANSIT AUTHORITY DEMAND RESPONSE SERVICES 

    • Provides transportation services to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities within the Tuscaloosa City limits  

    • Curb-to-curb service 

    • Wheelchair-lift equipped  

    • Assistance is only provided to help individual on and off the vehicle if requested 

    • Operates loosely within the routes and hours of the transit authority's public transportation service  

    • Cost is $2 every time an individual boards. Personal care attendants may ride for free  

    • Service is appointment only  

    • Eligibility  

      • Individuals who have disabilities that make traveling to and from a bus stop impossible  

      • Individuals who require a wheelchair lift and a wheelchair lift-equipped vehicle is not available on the route they need to travel  

      • Individuals who are unable to board, ride, or exit a public transportation bus even if they are able to make it to a bus stop and the bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift
