SSA DEFINITION OF DISABLED

Disabled Adult
-
An individual who is unable to engage in any substantial gainful activity (SGA) because of medically determinable physical or mental impairment that:

Can be expected to result in death, or

Has lasted or can be expected to last for a continuous period of at least 12 months

Provides transportation services to individuals with physical and/or intellectual disabilities within the Tuscaloosa City limits

Assistance is only provided to help individual on and off the vehicle if requested

Operates loosely within the routes and hours of the transit authority's public transportation service

Cost is $2 every time an individual boards. Personal care attendants may ride for free

Individuals who have disabilities that make traveling to and from a bus stop impossible

Individuals who require a wheelchair lift and a wheelchair lift-equipped vehicle is not available on the route they need to travel

Individuals who are unable to board, ride, or exit a public transportation bus even if they are able to make it to a bus stop and the bus is equipped with a wheelchair lift
